*ahem*
If you know me, you know this substack was a long time coming. In my post-grad journey to build confidence in myself as a writer and creative, I’ve long wanted to create a space where I can write on all the things that interest me. Whether that’s reflections on my journey towards reconnecting with ancestral herbal medicines or long-form essays on the connections between Black music and Black liberation, I hope to share lots with y’all and build intentional community right here on substack.
But for those who don’t know me: I’m Jasmine, a 22 year-old climate organizer, trainer, budding community herbalist, and writer. I was born and raised in Memphis, and I do a lot of thinking about what it means to be Black, queer, left, and love the South. Most of the time.
If you’re like me, you look to music and texts of the past and present for lessons on navigating late-stage capitalism. You’re curious about how afrofuturism and sci-fi can give us the tools to succeed in apocalypse, and wonder about how people of past empires managed to bring them down. You know that the world gives us lots of reason to be blue, and sometimes that’s best captured in song. And like me, you know that “niches” are the trappings of limited thinking - we’re curious and multi-passionate around here, so be ready for a little bit of everything.
Subscribe to receive lessons on liberation, deep thoughts on deep cuts, and musings on all the things that make I’m deeply curious about. Feel free to leave me a comment and let me know how you found this newsletter, and check out my first post here. It’s a short essay and review of sci-fi novel Noor by Nnedi Okorafor, and I think you’d really like it.
That’s all for now y’all. See y’all on the flip side.
Just dropping by to say your writing is really compelling and well written. Excited to see more posts from you in the future!
